Over the course of this semester, I have not only grown as a writer but I have also learned more about myself through the process of writing. Some of the assignments were, of course, difficult. These pieces challenged me but ultimately lead me to become a greater in my writing and portraying my thoughts coherently.
Over the semester I have grown in my writing in learning how to use my voice to portray my thoughts, to get my thoughts onto paper. I learned different techniques to make my stories more interesting and flowing naturally. I have also noticed a slight improvement on my grammar, vocabulary and punctuation. Growing in my writing has given me the push to continue writing and explore it more. I would like to learn how to write in different styles and how to suit those styles to the stories I create. I would also love to learn how to use different voices, writing from perspectives I normally would not.
I had various pieces of writing that I truly enjoyed writing and was proud of when I finished. I am proud of my accomplishment in writing a thirteen chapter novel, it is something that many people are unable to say they have accomplished in their life or have even attempted to do. I also enjoyed our free writes and streams of consciousness; I found that it was easy to find things to write and I had no problem filling those ten minutes, often I even ran out of time and was unable to finish the writing. I struggled mainly with the assignments that had many strict requirements, I found it difficult to include everything and stay within the assignment. The personal narrative with the flashback was especially difficult due to the fact that I was not writing from my own point of view and the tenses tended to get confusing.
In terms of writing I am taking the second part of creative writing this next semester. I am also planning on continuing the novel I wrote this semester; refining each chapter and adding in some more plot. Next year I am going to attend Saint Mary’s College and am thinking about taking a creative writing course.
I enjoyed class this semester and am very glad I took it. I have learned so much about myself, my writing, and other’s writing as well.
